MT 122 Calculator Competencies
To successfully pass MT 109, you should
be able to do the following on your TI-82 or TI-83 by the end of MT 122:
Evaluate expressions involving signed
numbers, fractions, radicals, exponents, and parentheses accurately on the home
screen.
Use QUIT, CLEAR, and
DEL.
Use [(-)] and -- appropriately.
Adjust the contrast on the screen.
Graph linear functions on calculator
including the origin, x-intercept, and y-intercept in the viewing
window.
Plot points using the lists in STAT and
statplot.
Use Y= for defining functions.
Use WINDOW to change the window settings.
Turn statplots on and off.
Trace on graphs and statplots and
alternate between graphs when tracing.
Pause and restart graphing by pressing
the ENTER key.
Other helpful calculator techniques you
may learn this semester are:
How to interpret some error messages.
How to interpret numbers that are
essentially zero like 3.24324E-27
How to evaluate functions on the
calculator using the VARS key and the Y= list.
How to do short cuts like calling the
previous answer or previous entry to the screen.
Use INS (2nd DEL) to insert
characters.
Turn functions on and off.
If you plan to
take STA 200 in the future, please purchase and learn how to use a TI-83. The
TI-82 does not have statistics functions that are needed for that course.
