COM 184-284 INTERCOLLEGIATE FORENSICS

Course Description:  Preparation for and participation in intercollegiate debating and public speaking. May be repeated up to a maximum of four times.

 

Course Objectives:

1.  To provide students with an opportunity to be involved in college speech and debate activities.  

2. Organize and coordinate attendance at college tournaments throughout the region.

3.  Plan and prepare to host one tournament a year at OCC.

4.  Develop the public speaking and critical thinking skills of our students.

5.   Cultivate a broader appreciation for public speaking as a social and intellectual activity.

 

Course Requirements:   Grades are based upon meeting attendance, practice session preparation, travel and competition based requirements. Students are required to participate in at least 1-2 tournaments in order to earn a passing grade in the lab.

 

Student Responsibilities:  Meet with me regularly concerning the development of competitive speech, theater, and/or debate presentations.  Each student has a mail box and is expected to check it for messages from coaches and teammates throughout the semester.  

 

Withdrawal Policy:  Students may withdraw and receive a  grade of  “W” until  midterm.  After that date,  students will receive the grade they earned through participation and involvement in speech tournaments throughout the term.  ** required attendance before and during the event.

General Education Competencies: The following general education competencies and assessments are included in COM 184-284, upon completion of this course you should be able to:

 

I.        Communicate Effectively

          1.       Read and listen with comprehension.

                    (Assessment: speeches, quizzes/tests of written & lecture materials)

          2.       Speak and write clearly using standard English.

                    (Assessment:  evaluation of outlines & speech texts, speech critiques)

          3.       Interact cooperatively with others using both verbal and non-verbal means.

                   (Assessment: group work/dyadic activities, peer evaluations)

          4.       Demonstrate information processing through basic computer skills.

(Assessment: use of multimedia formats, research assignments to promote    information literacy, using OCTC computer services to contact instructor, check grades, etc.)

II.       Think Critically  

1.                 Make connections in learning across the disciplines and draw logical conclusions.       

2.                 (Assessment:  written assignments & research activities which demonstrate connections to other disciplines such as history, government, social sciences, etc., student assignments related to Humanities Division’s common reading project)

 

3.       Demonstrate problem solving through interpreting, analyzing, summarizing, and/or   integrating a variety of materials.

                    (Assessment:  speeches designed to influence or propose solutions to social problems,           group activity)

          4.       Use mathematics to organize, analyze, and synthesize data to solve a problem.

(Assessment:  activities to illustrate proper use of statistics in spoken and written presentations, using multimedia to present and explain pertinent statistics)

 

III.      Learn Independently

          1.       Use appropriate search strategies and resources to find, evaluate, and use     information.

(Assessment:  on-line & library research activities, activities emphasizing ethical   standards for speakers and listeners and employing those standards in grading of        presentations, speech research and proper documentation of references)

2.   Make choices based upon awareness of ethics and differing perspectives/ideas.        

(Assessment:  discussion/assignments on cultural issues, common reading, speeches, mini debates)

 

          3.       Apply learning in academic, personal, and public situations

                    (Assessment: speech critiques)

 

          4.       Think creatively to develop new ideas, processes, or products.

                    (Assessment: presentations proposing a problem/solution(s), group    projects/activities)

 

IV.      Examine Relationships in Diverse and Complex Environments

          1.       Recognize the relationship of the individual to human heritage and culture.

                    (Assessment:  cultural speech, common reading, exposure to presentations by speakers of           diverse backgrounds)

 

          2.       Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship of the individual to the biological and physical environment.

                    (Assessment: use of the OCTC Professional Code of Conduct)

 

          3.       Develop an awareness of self as an individual member of a multicultural global community.

                    (Assessment:  self reports, research emphasizing similarities & differences in cultures)
