Dear Friends:
The OCTC Debate program has been in operation since 1991 when we hosted a small community college only speech contest in April of that year. Over the past 14 years, the team has won hundreds of awards at the local, regional, and national level. The 2004-05 squad continued this tradition of success by consistently working together and achieving at every level of competition, including Lincoln-Douglas, Novice, and Open divisions, throughout the season.
OCTC debaters earned top 5 finishes at 6 of the 7 tournaments we attended. The squad won 10 team awards, 14 individual speaker awards, and competed in elimination rounds 7 times throughout the season earning top 3 honors on 4 occasions. More importantly, the students bonded and were a true team and, as a consequence, represented the college well at every tournament they attended. Team members exuded class, intelligence, selflessness, cooperation, and good sportsmanship at every venue we visited. The team also hosted 2 highly successful tournaments this year.
Three of our debaters competed for the final time this season and we wish them well. Our departing debaters are: 1) Beth Phillips will transfer from OCTC and has received an academic scholarship to attend WKU in the fall; 2) Amy Rutledge will transfer and become a fulltime student at Patrick Henry College (Virginia) next fall; and 3) Elizabeth Nicolet will transfer to the University of Kentucky and is considering debating on scholarship for UK next fall.
Elizabeth was also recognized at NEDA Nationals as a Debate All-American for 2005. Elizabeth was selected as an All-American because of her outstanding debate performance, sterling academic record, and exemplary service to the community through her church and the local home school organization.
All of our team members are winners because they put forth the best effort possible and represented the college well. I am very proud of these young folks and know you join with me in toasting their success during the 2004-05 debate season.
Bob Glenn,
Director of Forensics, OCTC
