Below is general information regarding the face-to-face (as opposed to the KET telecourse) Introduction to Sociology courses I teach at OCTC. The information below is meant to be general, and will be modified and elaborated upon in the form of the course syllabus distributed early in the semester. 101SOC Course Description Introduction to Sociology is an introduction to the concepts and methods of sociology. Investigation of socialization, group processes, social institutions, and social change.
Course prerequisites This is a general education course that generally requires no prerequisites.
Technology/media component My courses are classified as “web enhanced”. This means that in my classes we use the world wide web, specifically Blackboard, student email, and the Internet. You do not need to have a computer with an internet connection at home to be successful in the course, however you do need to plan on accessing a computer with an internet connection.
Course Objectives Using discussion, lecture, films, and other media, the student will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of the phenomena known as society. In addition, it is a course objective to convert a common sense understanding of society into one based upon a sociological perspective.
Course work Research assignments During the semester students complete work designed to hone their research skills. Students first complete an annotated bibliography assignment early in the semester. Students develop a topic from their textbook, find a source illustrating that topic, and then summarize and review the source based on critical thinking questions.
Later in the semester students complete a second annotated bibliography assignment based on either three or five sources.
Students also are asked to complete a three to five page written assignment based on review of one of two chapters related to either race or gender inequality.
Exams Four exams are given during the semester. There is no comprehensive final exam. Each exam is multiple choice, ranging from 35-50 questions. I also allow the lowest test grade to be dropped at the end of the semester.
Attendance policy I believe attendance in your college classes, for each class session, is important. However, given the varied life circumstances of each of us, that is not always possible.
I also believe that as a college student you are an adult. This includes taking responsibility for your own behavior, such as attending class and keeping up with the material. At the same time I trust that students are operating in their own best self interest if they cannot make class. I am always willing to work with students that have extraordinary circumstances for missing excessive classes, and wish to stay enrolled in my class and are interested in completing the semester.
I like to work with all my classes at the beginning of the semester to establish an agreed upon set number of classes that can be missed. Beyond that number will result in a 5% reduction in the student’s final grade.
Late work policy All assignments in my classes are due on the date listed in the tentative schedule supplied at the beginning of the semester. The items are due at class time, or no later than the end of the day on the scheduled date. No late work is accepted. |
