Below is general information regarding the Introduction to Sociology KET telecourse I teach at OCTC. The information below is meant to be general, and will be modified and elaborated upon in the form of the course syllabus distributed early in the semester. 101SOC Course Description Introduction to Sociology is an introduction to the concepts and methods of sociology. Investigation of socialization, group processes, social institutions, and social change.
Course prerequisites This is a general education course that generally requires no prerequisites.
Mandatory orientation There are several logistical issues for this course, therefore I require students to complete a mandatory orientation for the course early in the semester. Students are asked to attend the orientation during a face-to-face session on campus, or are allowed to view a series of video orientations that are available through Blackboard.
Technology/media component This course is a telecourse, meaning you will have to access a video series as the primary content material for the course. The course is also classified as “web enhanced”. This means that in my classes we use the world wide web, specifically Blackboard, student email, and the Internet. You do not need to have a computer with an internet connection at home to be successful in the course, however you do need to plan on accessing a computer with an internet connection.
Accessing the video series There are a variety of methods to accessing the video series for this course. These include streaming the videos for free from the internet, watching the videos on you local KET television provider, renting the videos for the semester, checking the individual segments out from our OCTC library, and accessing the video transcripts. Each of these methods will be discussed in greater detail during the mandatory orientation held for the class.
Course work Research assignments During the semester students complete work designed to hone their research skills. Students complete work on an annotated bibliography assignment and/or a written assignment based on textbook material. For the annotated bibliography assignment(s), students develop a topic from their textbook, find a source illustrating that topic, and then summarize and review the source based on critical thinking questions.
Exams Students complete three take home exams, and three in class exams. The take home exams are based on the video series. The in class exams are conducted during a face-to-face session on campus, and the exams are based on textbook material.
Late work policy All assignments in my classes are due on the date listed in the tentative schedule supplied at the beginning of the semester. The items are due at class time, or no later than the end of the day on the scheduled date. No late work is accepted. |
