Nursing: Registered Nurse

The Owensboro Community and Technical College Nursing program prepares students to provide and manage client care. The program curriculum combines general and nursing education. Classroom lectures are combined with the clinical learning experiences at various health agencies in the community.

The program is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and the College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The degree of Associate in Applied Science in Nursing is awarded upon completion of the program, after which you will be eligible to take the National Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become a Registered Nurse.

Admission Requirements

Acceptance into the Associate Degree Nursing program is based upon a selective admission process. In order to be considered for admission, you must comply with college and program admission requirements by March 1 for Fall Admission or July 1 for Spring Admission. CPR Certification and documentation of an Active Status on the Medicaid Nurse Aide Registry (or successful completion of its equivalency) is required by the first day of class.

The following must be completed before the application deadline (March 1: Fall Admission or July 1: Spring Admission): 

  • Attend/view online the Pre-Admission Nursing Conference and submit a Data Report Form 
  • Submit an application to Owensboro Community and Technical College with “Nursing Pending” as the declared major 
  • Submit secondary school or high school equivalency credentials (GED scores and the official certificate) and other college transcripts to the OCTC Office of the Registrar 
  • Submit official ACT scores to the OCTC Office of the Registrar. Minimum acceptable score is a composite of 20 
  • Achieve ATI Academic Preparedness Category ≥Proficient on the TEAS Assessment 
  • Maintain a Nursing GPA (only factors in those courses required for an AAS in nursing degree) at or above 2.75

The following must be completed prior to entering the first nursing course: 

  • Computer Literacy Requirement (CIS 100 recommended) 
  • BIO 137 Human A & P I with a “C” or better 
  • MAT 110, MAT 150 or higher with a “C” or better 
  • PSY 110 Gen. Psych. or PSY 100 Intro. to Psych. 
  • CPR-Health care provider course (must be kept current throughout the program) 
  • Active status on Kentucky Nurse Aide Registry

The Kentucky Board of Nursing may deny licensure to a nursing graduate who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony that involves acts that bear directly on the qualifications of the graduate to practice.
