Surgical Technology

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings such as medical offices, out-patient clinics, and the operating room. This program provides clinical experience built upon classroom instruction in the basic sciences, patient care, aseptic techniques and surgical procedures.

Students enrolled in the Surgical Technology Program are required to achieve a minimum grade of ā€œCā€ in each Surgical Technology course. Programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and graduates are eligible to take the certifying examination offered by the National Board of Certification for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Mission Statement

The primary program mission is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologist in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior), learning domains. This will be accomplished by providing sound educational opportunities, both didactic and clinical, that will enable individuals to perform as Certified Surgical Technologists in competent, entry-level practice.

Associate in Applied Science (AAS)

  • General Occupational & Technical Studies (GOTS): 60-68 credit hours

Certificate

  • Surgical Technology Bridge Program: 18 credit hours

Diploma

  • Surgical Technologist: 46-59 credit hours

Admission Requirements

Note: CPR for Healthcare Provider course must be obtained prior to enrolling in the first Surgical Technology course and certification must be kept current throughout the Program.

  • Attend a Pre-Admission Conference scheduled in April.
  • Apply for admissions to Owensboro Community and Technical College if not currently enrolled in a KCTCS college.
  • Submit all requested documents as outlined in the Pre-Admission Conference by the deadline announced in the conference.
  • Candidate Interviews will be held in early May and can be scheduled following submission of required documents.
  • Consult OCTC for general admission requirements.
  • Consult KCTCS Senate Rules for system guidelines.
  • Candidates must complete all courses for the Surgical Technology Program with a minimum grade of a ā€œCā€. This includes all prerequisite courses.

Length of Program

Following completion of prerequisites and gaining acceptance into the Surgical Technology program, it is a two semester program with an additional intersession in the summer. The program (diploma and/or degree) begins in the Fall semester.
