Using the EBSCO Databases

Several databases are accessible from EBSCO. Academic Search Premier is a general database providing articles (many of them full-text) from over 2,800 periodicals and is a good place to begin your research. Coverage is from 1984 and is updated daily. To use this database:

1. Go to the library’s homepage at http://www.octc.kctcs.edu/library

2. Click on Databases

3. Click on EBSCO databases

4. Click on EBSCOHost Web and enter the user name and password if needed.

5. Click on Academic Search Premier or on the database title of your choice. If you are in a business class, you might also want to also use Business Source Premier and Regional Business News.

6. If you want to search several databases simultaneously, click in the boxes next to the appropriate databases, then click Continue at the bottom of the screen.

7. On the search screen, enter your search term(s) in the Find box. If using more than one word, link them together with the word "and" or put them in quotation marks to search for them as a phrase.

8. If you want to narrow your search, select one or more of the "Limit Your Results" options. You can limit to full-text articles, to scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles, to a certain date, or to a specific journal.

9. If you think you may have difficulty finding enough articles on your topic, you can expand your search by clicking on "Expanders" at the right of the search screen. Then select one or both of the "Expand Your Search" options.

10. Click on Search to begin processing your search. A new page will open with a list of results.

11. Some full-text articles will have Full Text below the article title. Click on this icon phrase to see the entire article in text format.

12. To print the article, click on the web browsers Print button. (You do have the option of emailing or saving the article to a disk instead by clicking on the chosen option.) Click on Result List to go back to your search results list.
