DESCRIPTION:

The biotechnology program provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge for entry into a biotechnology career.  Graduates will be well versed in the theories and principles of biological systems, field and laboratory techniques, and good manufacturing principles of the biotechnology industry.  The  industry provides a wide array of job opportunities, including bio-manufacturing and laboratory technicians, quality assurance technicians, and regulatory personnel.

Upon completion of the biotechnology program, graduates can:

1.          Describe the role of biotechnology from its early development to its major contributions to modern agriculture and medicine.*

2.          Describe the various techniques used in biotechnology.*

3.          Describe the various techniques used in bio-manufacturing.*

4.          Explain the wide variety of career opportunities in biotechnology.*

5.          Explain the structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.*

6.          Explain the biological function of cell organelles.*

7.          Describe the structure of nucleic acids.*

8.          Describe the structure of chromosomes.*

9.          Describe the flow of genetic information.*

10.       Describe gene expression.*

11.       Describe animal and plant biological processes.*

12.       Explain introductory chemistry and analytical techniques.*

14.       Describe the fundamental concepts, principles, and practices used to improve quality in organizations.*

15.       Implement a quality process through analysis and planning.*

16.       Make choices which reflect an awareness of ethical considerations in decision-making.*

17.       Explain the relationship between the environment and plant production.*

18.       Communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.*

19.       See the relationship between pathogens and human disease.

20.       Explain the morphology, biochemistry, and life cycles of representative prokaryotes, fungi, parasites, and viruses.
