The
expanding presence of Japanese owned auto supply
manufacturing industries in the Owensboro region led to
a renewed interest in forming a closer relationship with
the Japanese people. With the support of the Japanese
industries and the governments of the City of Owensboro,
Daviess County and Ohio County, Kentucky, a search for a
partner city in Japan was conducted. After substantial
research, the City of Nisshin, Aichi-ken, Japan, was
approached with the idea of becoming a "Sister Region."
The regional approach is to allow for more inclusion of
the smaller regional cities and towns and is in
recognition that three of the Japanese industries are
located at Bluegrass Crossings Industrial Park in Ohio
County. Exploratory exchanges were conducted during May
and August of 2006, which culminated in the official
visit of Mayor Akira Sago to the Owensboro region during
October 2006. An Agreement in Principle was signed in
Owensboro and it was agreed that the final document
would be signed in Nisshin in spring 2007 during the
exchange visit of the Owensboro region government
representatives.
