Nisshin City is
located between Owari and Mikawa, with Nagoya City on its
west, Toyota City and Miyoshi Town on its east, Togo Town on
its south and Nagakute Town on its north. Nisshin City
covers an area of 34.90 square kilometers, running 8.9
kilometers from east to west and 6.8 kilometers from north
to south; the city is surrounded by moderate hills ranging
from 50 meters to 160 meters above sea level, with an
average elevation of 70meters above sea level. The Tempaku
River flows through the center of the city from east to west
and is bordered by rich agricultural land. In October 1889,
a municipal system was introduced and 14 villages were
integrated into three villages, namely Kaguyama Village,
Hakusan Village and Iwasaki Village. In May 1906, these
three villages were merged and became Nisshin Village. When
Nisshin Village became Nisshin Town in January 1958, Nisshin
was a farming village with a population of just over 10,000
people. Since 1965, its population has grown rapidly due to
the progress in land development for housing, which was very
successful thanks to favorable geographic and social
conditions. Universities and other institutions were also
established in the region, and Nisshin became known as an
academic town. The national census conducted in 1990
revealed that the population of Nisshin had reached more
than 50,000; which drove Nisshin Town to obtain city
status. This was realized on 1 October 1994 when Nisshin
City was officially recognized as a new city. Nisshin City
has a long history, dating back to the Nara and
Heian Eras. It is located in the heart of a “famous
area for Ancient Kilns at the base of the western and
southern slopes of the Sanage Mountain Range”, and numerous
remains of kilns have been discovered there. In the
Sengoku Era (Age of Provincial Wars), this region was
famous as the area in which “the Battle of Iwasaki Castle”
was fought. It was this battle that triggered the “Battle
of Komaki and Nagakute”, in which the warlords of
Tokugawa and Toyotomi had fought.
