COMPASS - Exemptions |
|
|
You may qualify for an exemption from the COMPASS placement test or
an individual part of the test. However, you must
meet the requirements listed below. |
|
ACT Sub-scores |
|
In order to be considered for placement purposes, ACT scores must be
dated within the last five years of inquiring about an exemption. |
|
Reading |
|
An ACT sub-score of 18
or higher in reading exempts the student from the reading
part of the placement test. |
|
English |
- An ACT sub-score of 18
or higher in English exempts the student from the English part of
the placement test; however, the student will be placed into ENG 101
with the ENG 100 lab. The student may elect to take the COMPASS
test to attempt to test into ENG 101 without the ENG 100 lab.

An ACT sub-score of
20 or higher in English exempts the student from the English part of
the placement test and also places the student into ENG 101
without the ENG 100 lab.

Math |
- An ACT sub-score of 18
or higher in math exempts the student from the math part of the
placement test; however, the student will be placed into MT 150 with
the MT 100 workshop.. (The student may elect to take the
COMPASS test to attempt to test into MT 150 without the MT 100
workshop.)
- An ACT sub-score of 20
or higher in math exempts the student from the math part of
the placement test and also places the student into MT 150
without the MT 100 workshop.

Bachelor's
Degree |
You are exempt if:
- You have already
received a Bachelor's degree or higher, and
you have already
accrued the appropriate English and math credits for OCTC.
- You have accrued
the English credits, but not the college algebra credits, but are
not taking a math class or other class requiring knowledge of college
algebra.

Re-admit Students |
You are exempt if:
You were previously
enrolled at OCTC, and you have already
accrued appropriate English and math credits. (The Registrar's
Office makes the ultimate decision on such students.)

Visiting and/or Transient Students |
You are exempt if:
- You are seeking a
degree from another institution, and
you have already
accrued appropriate English and math credits; or
- You have accrued the English
credits - but not the college algebra credits - but are not taking a
math class or other class requiring knowledge of college algebra; or
- You are not taking
English or math courses at OCTC and have accrued college
courses that exempt you from the reading test.

and/or Advanced Standing Students |
You are exempt if:
You have already
accrued appropriate English and math credits.

Students |
You are exempt if:
- You are taking classes
for non-credit, and you have
already
accrued appropriate English and math credits; or
- You are not taking
English or math courses at OCTC and have accrued college
courses that exempt you from the reading test.
