Visual learners learn by seeing.  They represent approximately 60% of the population.*  The following information provides the characteristics and study tips for this sensory type.
Characteristics of Visual Learners
  • Information may not exist for them if it is not seen or  written down
  • Will be unhappy with a presentation if they are unable to take detailed notes
  • Remember what was read or seen
  • Have vivid imaginations
  • Don't retain what they hear for very long
  • May use color
  • May think in pictures or may think in words
  • May be avid readers
  • Facial expressions show their emotions
  • Remember faces, but not names
  • Like written reports better than verbal ones
  • Are sensitive to the ways things look or appear
  • Are in the habit of making lists for everything
 
Study Tips for Visual Learners
  • Take notes while listening to lectures
  • Use illustrations to remember content
  • Make and use flashcards for studying.  The act of writing the cards and viewing them will increase comprehension
  • Organize your material. The more you organize your notes and study material, the easier it will be for you to remember content
  • Use graph paper to create charts and diagrams that demonstrate key points
  • Review videotapes specific to the content you are studying
  • Actively review any photographs or diagrams in your textbook
  • Use the computer to organize material and to create graphs, tables, charts, and spreadsheets
  • Use visual metaphors to associate information
  • Use visual analogies to associate information
  • Write explanations down
  • Use guided imagery
  • Use color-coded highlighting for subjects
  • Draw mind maps
