Time Management

Along with each class comes a textbook, maybe a CD, and probably some study guides. Beyond that, the student must learn how to use these devices to his or her best advantage.

Highlighting certain text within your book tells your brain that the information is important.

  • Highlight only main headings, vocabulary words, and items of emphasis.
    • Usually, these areas are already in bold or italics in your textbook.
  • Also, mark only the bold or highlighted word, not the whole sentence or area.
    • Highlighting too much material overwhelms your brain and.

If your brain becomes overwhelmed, you will not be able to take in any new information.  In addition, you run the risk of your brain developing a barrier around information that you already know;  then, you will not be able to retrieve that information until you relax the barrier.

Although some people use different colors and associate the colors with different headings, be very careful in doing so.  In most cases, doing so simply overwhelms the brain.  Much more helpful is using one color only,  such as non-neon yellow, when highlighting.

Remember, the reason you are highlighting is to help your brain remember that the information is important and that you need to read the area surrounding it.  (See reading your textbook.)
