Want to Be a Tutor?

Tutor Training

How do you know if you need a tutor?  What do tutors do; what do they not do?  Will tutoring help you?

The Teaching and Learning Center has tried to answer those questions for you.  In addition, we want you to know that we have many types of tutors.  We have peer tutors - fellow students who must meet certain qualifications and who have been trained by us.  We have three staff members who tutor: Director Judy Coomes, Instructional Specialist Jelaine McCamish, and Instructional Specialist Sherry Lee.  In addition, we usually have faculty volunteers.

Therefore, you can see that you have a wide range of tutor types from which to choose.  We also have an assortment of tutoring hours.  They are always listed on our tutor board and on our tutoring schedules.  Our staff tutors are here daily.

When to seek a tutor

  • If you are having difficulty understanding lectures
  • If you are falling behind in class
  • If you are performing poorly on tests
  • If you want or need help with study skills
  • If you want or need help preparing for a test
  • If you are having trouble with homework assignments
  • If you are having difficulty understanding how to make a writing outline
  • If you are having problems writing a paper
  • If you are having problems understanding how to do research
  • If you don't understand how to use a computer
