Tutor Training

If you have never been to tutoring before, you may not know what to expect. Well, for once in your life, you can expect something to be all about you - and learning.  Tutors will help you learn your subject area.  More importantly, tutors will help you learn how to learn.

As you become more comfortable with your subject area, your tutor will back off a little and have you do more of the talking, more of the questioning, and more of the answering.  Eventually, you will be doing most of the talking, questioning, and answering, with prompts and small explanations from your tutor, who will, in turn, ask you questions. You will gain knowledge, confidence, and the ability to think critically.

Our tutoring is done on a walk-in basis, since we want everyone to have the opportunity to receive help.  Therefore, you may be sharing a tutor with another student or group of students.

What Tutors Will Do What Tutors Will Not Do

Tutors Will:

  • Provide confidentiality
  • Make you feel comfortable
  • Be qualified to tutor their area
  • Be patient
  • Be courteous
  • Work with you until you understand the subject matter
  • Ask for help from others, if needed; or attempt to find someone who can help you

Tutors also have other duties in the TLC.  They may have to answer the phone or help someone with a make-up test, e-mail, or SkillsTutor.

Tutors Will Not:

  • Help you with a make-up test, take-home test, or online test -
    (1) doing so would be unfair to the other students in your class, and
    (2) you wouldn't learn anything, which is the premise behind tutoring

You might believe that since a test is "take-home," you are allowed to receive help. However, your instructor is grading the take-home test.  In addition to being graded on knowledge of the content area, you are being graded on your ability to think logically, to do research in your textbook, and, in doing so, to locate the information.

  • Do your homework -
If you are being graded on your homework:
    (1) doing so would be unfair to the other students in your class, and
    (2) you wouldn't learn anything, the premise behind tutoring

Instead, tutors will work with you to understand the assignment.  If your homework is math, the tutors will work with you on similar questions.  If you have reading or writing homework, the tutor will work with you on understanding the assignment and on understanding similar work.

  • Proofread, edit, or write your writing assignment/s

  • Know everything about a subject area
Tutors are knowledgeable about their area, but they will not know everything about that area.  Truthfully, no one knows everything.  If your tutor doesn't know an answer, he/she will tell you and attempt to find someone who can help you.
